EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
