Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
