Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
