Significant Internet Failure Hits Dozens Websites and Apps

An extensive online outage has disrupted dozens online platforms and mobile apps worldwide, as users reporting troubles getting online following issues at the cloud computing system.

The disrupted platforms comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-owned operations such as its key e-commerce platform and the Ring security device manufacturer.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were further notifications of difficulties accessing the HMRC website on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring users used networks to report their security devices were failing.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of problems on specific platforms reached the tens of thousands for each platform.

Officials confirmed that the outage began in the east coast of the America at the cloud division, a section that provides vital web framework for a host of companies, who utilize space on the company's servers. AWS is the biggest global cloud computing platform.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), officials reported “higher failure rates and delays” for AWS services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The ripple effect seemed to hit apps worldwide, with the Downdetector site showing problems with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks online failures, further indicated a rise in problems on that morning, with many of them located in Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the outage started.
