A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
