United Kingdom Extends Methanol Toxicity Warning List with 11 Countries
British Foreign Office has added 11 new countries to its public warning roster concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated spirits.
The expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only last month, officials had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following multiple high-profile incidents including the fatal loss of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

Toxic alcohol is a toxic chemical typically used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not intended for ingestion.
While it is generated during the production of spirits, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the refining procedure.
However in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to detect.
Authorities' Advice for Travellers
Foreign Office representative a senior official stated that all travellers should know the indicators of methanol poisoning.
"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister advised.
"Should anything feels off, such as a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."
